I’m taking it back to Christmas of ’95. My brother, my sister and I had undone all our presents, when there was one left that our parents hadn’t put under the tree. Out it comes – a fairly large box all wrapped up. Ridiculously excited, we furiously ripped the paper off to reveal a Sony Playstation. My life was changed forever. The Playstation was a major part of my childhood, and holds many memories of my years growing up. Even when I got the whole thing illegally chipped and could get access to hundreds of games for a fiver. Still, it was the introduction of tech in to my life, and I’m fortunate enough to say that I was in the generation to experience this milestone in gaming and technology as a whole. I’m still a gamer, though not as hardcore these days, and I’m sure we can all relate to a little throwback of this amazing console. More on the reverse.

I’m no betting man, but I would put quite a bit of money on whoever you are reading this, that you have at least once played on a Playstation, PS2 or whatever. The original Playstation shaped gaming forever. The first ever console to ship 100million units (even though it did take over 9 years to do so). The console was so popular in fact, that games were still being bought up until 2007 when Sony finally decided to cease production on the games; over 11 years since its release. Incredible. I don’t know about you, but one thing that kept me coming back was the intro sound. Yeah, you know the one I’m on about. Press play below and enter nerd mode with me as you get tingles all the way to your fingertips as the chime sounds.
Yeah. Amazing, right?
Of course, once that is over, we’re on to the games. Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Ridge Racer, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider, Abe’s Oddysee, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Worms, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Tony Hawks Pro Skater and Metal Gear Solid. This console gave birth to gaming franchises that are still well and truly alive and kicking. We would spend hours playing them all. On a console that never, ever, broke.
Anyway, I can go on all day. This is a throwback, and you need to bask in the glory of the Playstation rather than read my ramblings all day. Below are some video of my favourite games of the console. Enjoy.
P.S. virtual hi-five if you know about the first one below. What. A. Game.
