Caribbean Cruising – Haiti & Jamaica | Royal Caribbean

It’s not often that you can claim to have woken up in a different country four days in a row but that’s exactly what happened when Adam and I took to the seas and embarked on our first full length cruise, courtesy of Royal Caribbean. A quick plane ride (please note the sarcasm as this plane […]

Lacoste L!VE Pétanque Tournament

posted by on 29/09/2013

What happens when France’s biggest lux-sports brand give a bunch of hipsters an open space and a set of balls? Lots of laughter, ball-tekkers, tense competition and a whole lot of trash-talk. On Thursday 26th September Y&Y took part in Lacoste UK’s first ever L!VE Pétanque Tournament. Joined by the teams behind many of London’s top fashion and lifestyle sites, we were competing against each other from outside of our comfort zones – so not from behind our laptops or at an image-hipster event – to celebrate the launch of the LACOSTE L!VE LAB collection. Read on to see how we threw it down (literally) and came a very respectable second-place.

If – like most of us playing on Thursday – you’ve never played pétanque (or it’s closely related cousin boules) before, the game’s overall objective is most simply explained as throwing large heavy balls as close as possible to a small target ball. Each team has six larger balls and whoever gets the most balls closest to the small ball wins the round. We had a set of helpful adjudicators on hand to make sure we stuck to the rules…but unfortunately our first adjudicator was a touch too helpful to our competitors Who’s Jack. Taking a shining to the ladies, he tried to fix the game in their favour – but we still won. HA.

As the night went on the tournament really got under-way and teams were getting tossed out left-right-and-centre. Our secret weapon Adam made sure we stayed in the running.

We were up against Individualism in the semi-finals. It was all fun and games until it got real serious. Tape measures were drawn. These faces were made:

Our tekkers (technique) prevailed (*cough*Istillcantthrow*cough*) and we made it to the finals. We were challenging Menswear Style. The tension was palpable as super-competitive Yin feigned good sportsmanship and shook his opponent’s hand.

If the game was serious before, in the finals it wasn’t even a game. It was REAL LIFE. We were throwing our boules for victory, for triumph, and for honour. But Menswear Style unleashed THEIR secret weapon – their only girl member, who, unlike me, could throw bloody well! They nabbed the final rounds. And collected the gold. We were, of course, still champions though.

Next year, we’re coming for the title.

Many thanks to the Lacoste team for an awesome evening and big up FJ on photography duties.
