Innovation and taking things into your own hands seems to be the new trend that has hit the music industry lately. We’ve had Kanye present his music via a projection of his music video on the walls of many cities across the world. We’ve had Jay Z change the game with the release of his latest album Magna Carter Holy Grail and now we have Ryan Leslie doing his part to keep the wheels of change in motion. Ryan Leslie is set to release his new album Black Mozart later this summer and to prepare his fans he has released a 25 minute documentary which documents the albums recording process and other facets of Leslie’s life. Black Mozart was recorded and filmed in a week in early December 2012. The documentary serves as just the start of goodies that fans will be treated to should they sign up and become a member of his Renegade movement. Peep the documentary and learn more about the Renegades after the cut.

To get your hands on the new album fans are being encouraged to sign up to his Renegade membership. Through this membership fans will be able to download his album when he releases it bypassing the usual iTunes set up. In addition to this becoming a member will allow fans to connect with Ryan on a more personal level via a dedicated email address.
“Imagine me being able to look up every member of my fanbase on my iPhone and actually know who they are on a personal level. This is the dream I’ve always had. To be able to actually recognise you at the meet & greet. To be able to actually know how you were feeling yesterday because I’m following you on Instagram and Twitter. That why I’ve started this club.
When I left my record label, I did so because I realised that most people are only worried about sales figures and sales volume. I am worried about you – the people whose money make my dream possible. I want to be able to say thank you, not just to a huge group of anonymous fans, but to specific ones that actually care about my career and the art that I’m sharing with the world.
I call this group the #Renegades because I know this is an unorthodox approach. Nevertheless it’s one in which I truly believe.
“Having 500K Twitter followers and 100K Instagram followers is great. At the same time, I have no idea which one of my followers have bought an album, bought a concert ticket, bought a snapback. This club is designed to provide a solution to that challenge. Becoming a member of this club means that I can follow you on Instagram and Twitter and get to know the people who are truly supporting my art. I am building a private network of #Renegades. People who show up to the concerts. People who actually buy the albums. People who spend their hard earned money and show up early to the meet and greet!
You are the active people that will receive all of the news before everyone else. Exclusive early merchandise releases at a discount. Pre-sale of meet & greet + concert tickets. Special invitations to non-ticketed events. Private dinners while I’m on tour. Exclusive content around the making of the album. Invitations to the screening of the Black Mozart film.
This is the relationship I’ve always wanted with the people who have made my dream come true.”
So there you have it, another innovative step that an artist is taking to become different from the norm. Are you a big Ryan Leslie fan, will you be signing up or even if you’re not a fan what do you think of his Renegade movement and the way in which artists are turning to new ways of out reach to their fans?
