Over two hundred and fifty showrooms, studios, galleries, workshops and exhibition venues opened their doors last week as the forth edition of Clerkenwell Design Week took place. Showcasing the latest industry trends, innovations and product launches, Clerkenwell Design Week is a three day annual festival that brings together the best from the world of design and architecture.

Since the industrial revolution, Clerkenwell has housed craft workshops, printers, clock makers and jewellers. Traditional crafts, such as printing and book binding still flourish, as do graphic designers. Over the last two decades, global businesses have made Clerkenwell their home, shaping the borough into the UK’s most important generator of creativity and innovation. Clerkenwell is now home to a plethora of new media agencies, graphic and interactive design studios and more than two hundred architecture practices, more per square mile than anywhere else in the world!
A highlight for me was ‘The Huts’ by charity Architecture for Humanity, who are a global network of professionals working pro-bono to deliver design and construction services to people and communities in need both here in the UK and abroad. Where resources and expertise are scarce, innovative, sustainable and collaborative design will make a difference. For Clerkenwell Design Week, four outside installations called ‘The Huts’, were made entirely from recycled materials and placed around various exhibition sites. Each hut had a different theme, reflecting the spirit and ethos of Architecture for Humanity.
Other stand out exhibitors were Muuto (I’m a sucker for Scandinavian design), British handmade furniture from Bark, the debut lighting collection from Luminosity and Studio Tilt who launched their latest products.
