Caribbean Cruising – Haiti & Jamaica | Royal Caribbean

It’s not often that you can claim to have woken up in a different country four days in a row but that’s exactly what happened when Adam and I took to the seas and embarked on our first full length cruise, courtesy of Royal Caribbean. A quick plane ride (please note the sarcasm as this plane […]

Herman Miller – Why Design? Series

posted by on 05/12/2012

US furniture and equipment manufacturer Herman Miller have decided to celebrate the design process as a foray into the unknown or as George Nelson once stated “I have never met a designer who was retained to keep things the same as they were.” To do this, they’ve created a new video series asking ‘why?’, Why Design takes a look at the world through the eyes of their designers; each of whom touch on a different aspect of the process. More on the reverse.

56+1 x Beach London – What Next

posted by on 04/12/2012

If you have any spare time in the next two days, I suggest you head down to Beach London on Cheshire Street to check out their latest exhibition. It’s collaboration between themselves and publication 56+1 showcasing the work of an inspiring set of graduate illustrators. I checked it out on launch night – it’s a wonderful concept where each artist asks the next one a question that they’ll have to answer in the form of an illustration. Beach London got things started with the first question – If you could build anything, what would you build?. 56+1 is a series of publications, each one a collaboration chosen by Fivefootsix. For each issue, we choose a theme or concept that allows them to showcase the creative talent of an artist, writer or photographer that inspires them. Hop on after the cut.

Breakfast @ Electric Diner – Portobello Road

posted by on 04/12/2012

Oh boy, I’ve had 5 back to back early starts. Usually I’d fit in a lie in on a Friday night but an early morning shoot in a frozen forest ruined my sleep plans. However a breakfast invite to Soho House’s new food spot on the other side of London wasn’t one to turn down. Soho House Group have teamed up with Chicago chef and restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff to open the Electric Diner, next door to the Electric Cinema. I do apologise in advance for the lack of imagery, I had to leave my camera at home in order to attend a film premiere last night. More on the flip side.

Hollywood Costume Exhibition @ the V&A

posted by on 04/12/2012

I have always been fascinated by the wonders of cinema and along with my more recent interest in the world of fashion, this caught my eye as a must see. I feel I have an understanding, even if basic, of most of the elements that make up a film but I think costume is very often overlooked. I highlighted the choice of clothing in recent hit Lawless for my very first Yin & Yang post a month or so ago, looking at how it can inspire every day fashion choices. If I am honest though this was the first time I had really taken any significant notice of the costume choice in a film, so this exhibition was a great opportunity to expand my understanding.

Topshop's Winter Wonderland Christmas Film

posted by on 04/12/2012

Traditional womenswear is something we’re slowly moving away from on the site. Sportswear we’ll still cover but fashion related content, you can just hop on over to Vogue.com or any fashion blog for the latest lookbooks and advice. Topshop have just unveiled their first ever Christmas film and with the release, they’ve also unveiled the identity of the mystery Hollywood actress – Kate Bosworth. It’s the retailer’s first 360 interactive digital campaign, the film itself takes inspiration from the famous Michelle Pffeifer singing scene in ‘The Fabulous Baker Boys.’ More on the reverse.

Dope Quote #55

Strike while the iron is still hot. When I was down and out earlier this week with a cold, I decided to finally give a show that I’ve slept on for a while. That show was Mad Men, which most of you already know about, it’s set in New York during the golden era of advertising in the 60s. 5 days and 30 episodes later, I think it’s fair to say I’m addicted. It’s all because of the lifestyle, style, industry, pitches and more. I’ve taken away a few lessons from it (I know it’s not real!) The one I want to share with you is the quote above from Duck Philips to Peggy when he tries to lure her to rival agency Grey. More on the reverse.

Ferrari do headphones, apparently. Well Logic3 do headphones and have teamed up with the luxury Italian car brand to create this elegant collection of headphones. I’ve let my other half review it since I’m so used to my colourware Beats now – hard to detach from myself and give an unbiased opinion. Hop on after the cut.

Dawn Richard | Whiteout – EP Review

posted by on 02/12/2012

After her last EP ‘Armor On’ which was met with much deserved praise earlier this year, Dawn is set to debut the first of her trilogy ‘Goldenheart’ in January. Yesterday however, she released ‘Whiteout’ a Christmas EP that serves as a prelude to what she’ll be dishing out come January. ‘Whiteout’ is packing some slick production, tight vocals and instinctively Christmas themes. I’ve had a spin and after the break you’ll find what I think of it.
