Introducing Tori Kelly

posted by on 25/09/2012

I have done a few of these posts in the past and every time I do so I get excited about the artist I am writing about. Anyone who has seen some of my tweets over the Olympic period, will have seen me refer to Tori Kelly’s music accompanied with the words “feel good” and “inspiring”. So to a certain extent this Introducing post is long overdue. For those of you that do not know much about the 20 year old California native, check out more info after the jump.

This may be a huge generalisation but I am going to go right ahead and say it anyway! Many artists discovered on youtube are very good at covering songs but not so good at performing their own material. Maybe because it is easier for an upcoming Youtube artist to be judged on songs we already know? However, I don’t think this applies to Tori Kelly. Kelly’s cover songs, particularly the ‘Thinkin’ About You’ by Frank Ocean is a mere introduction to the quality of her voice and music. As a result of watching her covers, I felt compelled to download her EP “Handmade Songs” and was blown away by the refreshingly honest lyrics and acoustic authenticity that underpins all of Kelly’s songs.

Confetti’ is a particularly notable song for me and maybe for all the achievers and go-getters out there. Confetti would speak to all those people that strive to get to the top but believe that happiness won’t come until you get there. Sometimes in trying to climb the life ladder we lose sight of the importance of day to day happiness. Kelly reminds us to “Live for right now because what if tomorrow never comes, I am not waiting for the Confetti to fall”. Great song. Just listen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Ciao for now!
