Cool Runnings pt 2: Nike Run To The Beat
posted by Tahirah on 22/08/2012
We’re at it again. Seems like the Nike British 10K wasn’t enough for us; Candice, Derek and I are taking on more than double the distance with Nike’s Run To The Beat music half-marathon on October 28th. With Candice running a full marathon just a week before in Amsterdam, and me doing the Amsterdam half-marathon at the same time, and Derek running his first ever half-mara, it will be a massive challenge for us all.

However, we’ll be ready for the challenge. Using Nike Training Club’s training plan, available for download via facebook and suitable for all needs – new runners who’s main goal is to finish, intermediate runners working towards a time and pros with a speedy goal in mind. I’m using Coach Purvis’ beginner’s programme, but I’ve tailored my plan to my needs – in my opinion I’m somewhere between a newbie and an intermediate so I’ve upped the mileage on some days and mixed up my cross-training.
Candice and I went to Nike’s Run To The Beat launch at Nike’s Fuelstation in Clapham Common last Tuesday, 14th August to run a quick 5K, get some kit, good food, physio and some invaluable advice to kick us off on our road to training.
Personally taking on my biggest physical challenge ever, as I’m doing three half-marathons this year (aside from Amsterdam and Run To The Beat which take place a WEEK from each other, I am also doing the Reggae Marathon in Jamaica this December – more on that later) I’m keen to make sure I’m as fit as possible! Speaking with Nike master trainer Jamie about nutrition, running, cross training and more showed me how much there’s still to learn.
Candice, who is running an ultra marathon (30 miles) and a full-marathon before Nike’s Run To The Beat is also putting herself through her paces, and is keen to make sure she keeps fit and healthy. Derek approaches his first half with slight trepidation – totally unfounded, after he blazed up his first timed 10K with a speedy sub-1hr time. Expect more updates from each of us in our training journey as we keep running cool and take on the roads as Cool Runnings all over again.
While I strap on my Lunarglide+ 4s (which feel just a bit like cushions on my feet!) and get ready to hit the road for another run, check out some pictures from the Run To The Beat launch, including a HIDEOUS stretching picture of me at the end.
