Album Review | Aiden Grimshaw – Misty Eye

posted by on 20/08/2012

Stepping out of the shadows of someone or something can be a hard thing to do but this is exactly the task that lies ahead of Aiden Grimshaw. Once of X-Factor fame the young 20 year old is aiming to stake his claim as a credible and more importantly successful music artist outside of the huge juggernaut that is the X-Factor. Misty Eye is his first full-length offering since his exit from the show; see what we think of it on the flipside.

Music is literally everything! The emotion and feeling one is able to pour into a song that then translates and resonates with others is second to none. One topic that seems to connect with people is the subject of love and love lost, a subject that many choose to sing about. Aiden is no different from the rest in that sense however unlike some Aiden’s vocal seems to add an extra dimension.

His somewhat haunting tone pierces through and penetrates, hitting the right spot. Who knows, maybe the mood I’m in right now is fitting for this album as I listen to it but this ish is really doing it for me! Don’t even get me started on his falsetto, jheeze! Y’all know I love a good falsetto, I’ve said it many times before

Misty Eye is very much a pop album however it is a very good pop album with songs that are meaningful and filled with emotion rather than the throwaway trash that has littered our charts in recent years. The album starts with the hard hitting gritty ‘Hold On’ quickly setting the tone and enforcing that this is no bubble gum pop shit.  The lead single ‘Is This Love’ follows as the albums second song. ‘Is This Love’ may have unfortunately only landed at the #35 spot on the chart but it deserved so much more. I was a fusion of great sounds to make a great pop song coupled with great vocals, one of the stand out tracks!!

Moving toward the middle of the album and things start to take a somber turn, the album it’s self is kind of moody but not in the Adele I’m gonna cry my eyes out kinda way. The albums title track ‘Misty Eye’ nicely slows things down and truly showcases Aiden’s capturing vocal.  Its by this time that I stop and think to myself X-Factor who?

‘Breath Me’ is the only cover on the album a fact that I was unaware of until I dug deeper and done a little research. Covering the Sia track was a great decision as it fits the albums tone perfectly – Moody, haunting, intense and capturing!

This is one of those albums where you just zone out and stay in your own space for a while whilst its playing. You listen to every word and follow every melody thinking about situations in your life that a particular song relates to.  Before you know it you are on the final song ‘Curtain Call’. Again this song is simply great! Arguably one of the best on the set. It’s a great ending to a very very good album, an album that Mr Grimshaw should be extremely proud of. His writing skills and vocal ability are not to be slept on. Im gonna need for people to get behind this project and support!

Stay tuned for an interview with the man himself coming this week!! Until then I’ll leave you with the great ‘Curtain Call’.
