FRANK OCEAN x TYLER THE CREATOR
“Golden Girl”, a Californian sun-kissed bonus track from Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator to appear on the physical copy of “Channel Orange” next week. After Watch The Throne, this has been one of the most successful album release strategies in recent memory – and it’s certainly worth the hype. Here Frank and Tyler express their love for a golden girl who brings her lover half an orange in the morning…and whom they hope doesn’t leave a green mark around their neck(!)

FRANK OCEAN
A gay love song? Ah well, I don’t care – something about Frank’s delivery and double entrende-filled lyricism that I can bump to. The song relates to the film and Jenny’s character – if you remember it. He’s tried to depict his own and her perspective simultaneously, it’s a metaphor for his own experiences. If you haven’t downloaded Channel Orange yet, what’s wrong with you? It’s a great album, for me it’s a fusion of R&B and Neo-Soul, not as complex as the latter. Simple but yet complicated as I feel most of the songs will fly over folks heads, including my own.

YUNA
Yuna delicately reignited my love for this beautifully written ode to the curiousity of love. Malaysian singer songwriter, Yuna carefully layers harmonies on top of her own percussion effects and proceeds to hit every note with precision on her fresh take on Frank Ocean’s hit, “Thinkin Bout You“. Yuna is in London to perform at the Converse Represent gigs on 30th July

ODDISEE
This track had me daydreaming about Saturday mornings in my Mum’s kitchen, eating breakfast whilst she sung along to old soul and funk records at full blast. Oddisee backs up his superb beat selection and production team with smart, witty, honest lyrics to which we can all relate. I can’t wait for Oddisee’s London performance this September at Jazz Cafe…in the meantime vibe to “People Hear What They See” his latest project!

KENDRICK LAMAR
Man, Kendrick is on a different wavelength to the other cats. This is definitely one of them songs that gets better with each play, I actually disliked it on my first listen and now I dig it – initially this song flew way over my head, dismissed for a typical ‘let’s get crunk’ in a club song. It’s way more than that, see if you can listen to it from the perspective Kendrick is trying to depict.
