A Conversation With Folaju

We sat down for a coffee with the London-based photographer. There’s even a 2 Chainz reference.

ASOS Menswear Spring/Summer 2012

posted by on 08/11/2011

I wasn’t actually expecting to go to this, had a lot of work on but as its one of our clients, my boss insisted…so who am I to say no to leaving the office to check out clothes. Nuh uh. Soon after we headed to the press day at Victoria House Basement in a helicopter cab. Some of y’all will remember the venue from Vice’s Creator’s Project party – its HUGE and ASOS have filled it out with a plethora of collections. More on the reverse.

We headed to menswear first, naturally. One thing ASOS do well is catering for all their audiences as broad as it is, they’ve got something for you whether you work in a cafe, office, gym – you name it. They do it.

The first room (pictured above) is full of gentleman’s garments, tailored cuts never goes out of fashion. It’s nice to see ASOS step up their variety of though, last season was clearly lacking. This will certainly challenge the likes of Topman and Zara in the affordable smart menswear market. I know for sure a lot of men BROWSE for items such as pocket squares, ties and more on Mr. Porter but who really has the money to frequently shop there? I’m yet to make a purchase on there, I just window-browse for style and photography inspiration. Who really has money for a Ł70+ pocket square? And if you did, would you really spend that much on a square of fabric? Nah fam.

ASOS have stepped it up so folks who aren’t willing to splash the cash like us can afford to dress like a true English gentleman. A fine selection of pocket squares, ties, blazers and most of all – shoes. Though a lot of the shoes do look like this season’s Made In England collection, the selection is incredible and the price is most likely in the Ł50-100 range. Which is great for a shoe fanatic like me that spends at least a grand every 6 months on them. Yikes.

The other collections are definitely on trend with all the patterns, prints and vibrant colours. Much more youthful and streetwear influenced, I definitely dig all the sweatshirts and bags. Lots of Navajo prints, I feel for Pendleton who will probably take a hit with all the other brands jumping on it. Anyone else notice how camo has been popular this season? Military chic is slowly coming back, I’m a fan but don’t personally own any camo print clothing.

Bags galore. Slyly annoys me that they’re going to be selling that is completely leather because it took me a few years to find my one which cost me a few hundred. I can just see every Boreditch mofo wearing one now :(. I’m going to leave you with a few photographs from the ASOS Black collection and womenswear for you ladies!
