There are fewer things I like more than listening to a real music artist that has talent in abundance. I was introduced to an American artist called Marques Toliver by a PR friend a few weeks ago. I was meant to post about him the same day that I first became aware of him, however I don’t know if it was my selfishness of wanting to keep his music to myself a while longer until he’s thrust into the spotlight or the stress over 3 assignments and one dissertation to start and finish in just over a month. Regardless of the reason I now want to introduce you to the amazing Marques Toliver.
The above video is the first time I was to hear and see the classically trained musician and I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say he is a pleasure to listen to and watch. An artist that cannot only sing, but one who can also play an instrument always intrigues me. The violinist plays his instrument and sings with such ease and what I like most is the fact we don’t see to many artists in the mainstream who play a violin and sing. The norm is usually a piano or guitar, so it’s a welcome change. I’m sure in 2011 we’ll be hearing more from the 23 year old who now resides in London after moving over from New York.
Before moving to London, Marques, who is originally from Florida, used to spend his time busking and working in the music scene in New York. However not only content with being a violinist and singer the young artist is also a budding filmmaker and composer. He describes himself as a creator and has this to say about himself:
My birth name is Marques Toliver. Creating sounds and melodies are my forte. Yes this time I swear that I’m ready. I feel it in the atmosphere. Forever has disappeared. Taking with it all of my magic, but I found my home. I found my home. Deep in my heart I know its right, but my enemies try to break me. I wont give up without a fight I got to keep on pressing on.
I got to keep my mind free just to keep on walking even if I’m all alone.
If your familiar with the sounds of John Legend then you might notice the similarities in the two’s singing voice. I thought of John Legend as soon as I watched his Jools Holland performance of ‘White Sails’. John Legend is one of my favourite singers and on the recent evidence from the music I’ve heard so far from Marques Toliver I see no reason why he wont be one of my preferred singers. I have a stream of his EP, which I would like to share with you all, but unfortunately I can’t as yet. However as soon as I can you will all be the first to hear about it.
