Yooo I can’t be letting Yang chose his top 5 and not do one for myself. Right, when it comes to music for me it’s almost impossible to pick 5 tunes from the 1000s that I’ve listened to this year. I listen to at least 5 new tracks on a daily basis, my iTunes library consists of over 14,000 songs and yes I do buy music. My musical tastes are very eclectic! but I’m going to stick with Hip-Hop & Rap tunes (mainly commercial/radio friendly tracks) in this list, after the cut for my top 500.
Just messing, I’d love to pick a top 500! it would be so much easier. I’ll start shit off with a Drizzy Drake tune.. (list in no particular order)
1. Drake – Best I Ever Had
“Buzz so big, I could probably sell a blank disc”
This is the type of joint you dedicated to somebody, makesure she that special somebody though. This was my tune since the day ‘So Far Gone’ mixtape dropped in February, this and ‘Houstatlantvegas’ by Drake have both got major plays on my iTunes library. I don’t get the video but whatever.
2. Lil Wayne & Young Money – Every Girl
“We like her, we like her too”
My anthem. Naw, it’s just an uplifting track for me especially when I’m going through some emotional times. I do like alot of girls but does that make me a player? This was my jam for last spring. I’ve changed now…err….yes.
God dayum this list is hard to pick.
3. Kanye West – Welcome To The Heartbreak (feat. Kid Cudi)
“And my head keeps spinning, can’t stop having these visions, I got to get with it”
This song is fire! lyrically and musically, he uses auto-tune in ways which T-Pain and co overlooked. ‘My friend showed me pictures of his cribs and all i could show him was pictures of my cribs.’ This tune is deep much like the rest of the album, a must cop in my opinion. Kanye did it again with his experimental 808′s & Heartbreak which I loved but not only did he put out a dope album, He signed my favourite artist to his label, Kid Cudi. He’s phenomenal, so different to anyone in the game at the moment. He spits about stuff that I can relate to; most definitely Hip-Hop’s sensitive soul. My iTunes ‘Most Played’ playlist is full of his songs!
4. Kid Cudi – Heart Of A Lion
“At the end of the day, day, my momma told me don’t let noone break me, let noone break me.
At the end of the day, day, nobody, nobody ever could stop me, ever could stop me.
At the end of the day, day, you can’t regret if you were tryin’, if you were tryin’.
At the end of the day, day, I’m walking with a heart of a lion, yeahh.”
Real talk. It would be a crime not to have a song from the Cudder himself. Most tracks of his debut album would have easily made this list, the album is soo good that I bought it twice :|
5. Lupe Fiasco – Shining Down (feat. Mathew Santos)
“I don’t idolize America, I’m dancing with the stars”
Lupe isn’t back, he never left to be back. I cannot wait for his Lasers album to come out! He is without a doubt one of the best lyricists of our generation. This song exemplifies that; tentative drum loop, chirping synths, a dope guitar riff, a touch of Auto-Tune, and a Matthew Santos hook all add up together to make another masterpiece from Wasalu.
That’s my top 5 folks but I don’t know to be honest, tomorrow I’d chose totally different songs. These aren’t my top 5 r&b songs though, thats a whole new list. It’s just way too hard to pick 5!
Stay safe ya’ll,
