In a world where electronica bands are a dime a dozen and screamo bands are even more common than that you really have to have something special to stand out amongst the rest and believe me when I say that Denver duo Kyle Even and David Schmitt better know as Breathe Carolina have just that something.
If you are to even mention the word ‘scrunk‘ or ‘crunkcore‘ I’m sure that nine times outta ten the first bands to come to people’s minds would be the abominations to music brokeNCYDE or the slightly more endurable Millionaires but Breathe Carolina are here to change that. For where these bands use nothing other than sheer vulgarity and in your face gimmicks and shock tactics that frankly do not shock and leave the listener often dazed and confused as to what they have just endured, BC use a much more sophisticated approach to the genre. With enjoyable harmonies, well placed screams and a strong emphasis on electonica music, achieved thanks to programmes such as Logic Pro, Reason and Amplitube, BC have managed to get a strong fan base all over the world.
Since froming in 2007 and thanks to relentless touring with bands such as Jefree Star, A Skylit Drive, Sky Eats Airplane, The Secret Handshake, Pierce The Veil, Emarosa, Cute Is What We Aim For, Family Force 5 and Meg & Dia to name just a few Breathe Carolina have managed to get their music across to a large audience.
I first heard Breathe Carolina back in 2007 with a cover of U2′s 1987 hit ‘With or Without You‘ and shortly after that in November 2007 they released their first EP entitled ‘Gossip‘ with their first full length record released 10 months later on the 16th September 2008; both releases were recorded in a bedroom using only the Apple music programme GarageBand. Their newest record ‘Hello Fascination‘ was released on August 19th 2009.
Breathe Carolina are not to be taken too seriously, they are a light hearted band who create music that is a perfect blend of what the alternative scene has to offer at the moment, while taking influences from mush more poppier acts, I truely believe that BC really have something to offer lovers of just about any genre.
